John F. Hogan, 89, of 11 Eustis Ave, Newport, RI, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Heatherwood Nursing Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Rabatin Hogan. Born in Newport, RI on May 23, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Anna Bric Hogan.John Hogan grew up in Newport and graduated from Rhode Island College in1941. He began his career as a teacher in 1946, by 1954 he became a principal in the Newport School Department. He served Newport Schools for 30 years, mostly as the principal in the elementary schools, including Callendar, Mumford, Lenthall and Cranston-Calvert School, until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement, he maintained an active mind and schedule, and worked for 26 years at the Preservation Society as a docent. John spent many years providing tours of the Elms and Hunter House, as well as giving talks on the mansions at area schools. John was also a member of Redwood Library and the Retired Teachers Association.He is survived by his sons Paul J. Hogan of Newport, RI, and Peter M. Hogan of Charlotte, NC, and five grandchildren, Ronald Hogan of New York, NY, Timothy Hogan of Andover, MA, Casey Hogan and Devon Hogan, both of Newport, RI, and Chris Petersen of Savannah, GA. He is preceded in death by a son Ronald T. Hogan, and his sister Mary Machedo.His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 10, at 8:00 am from the Hambly Funeral Home, Brick House 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, September 9 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Hambly Funeral Home.
