Wakefield, RI - John Frederick Barker, 87, of Wakefield, formerly of Mt. Vernon Street, Newport and Wolcott Avenue, Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 surrounded by his family after a short illness. Born in Newport on September 7, 1927, he was the son of the late John E. and Dorothy M. (Cornelis) Barker. Mr. Barker was a graduate of De La Salle and worked at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island before being drafted into the United States Army serving in the European Theater. After he returned home he attended John Carroll University where he was roommates with Don Shula. Jack worked for Proctor Gamble for a short time before beginning his career with the telephone company, retiring from Verizon after 37 years. He was a former member of the Newport Lions Club, and a member of the NRA, he was communicant of St. Lucy's Church. John loved spending time on the water in and around Newport, both sailing and fishing. He is survived by his children, John Barker and his wife Rita of Wakefield, RI and James Barker and his wife Dyan of West Kingston, RI, and his five grandchildren, Kyle and Connor Emmett, Garrett Barker, Madison and Jack Barker.
