John Giampietro, of 63 Valley Lane Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Squantum Drive, Middletown, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at the RI Veterans Home, Bristol, RI. He was the husband of Frances Delores Martocchio Giampietro. Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late John and Phyllis Ventressa Giampietro. John enlisted in the US Navy in 1943, and served for 22 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. During his time in the service, he worked as a commissary man and served during World War II and Korea, with many tours through the Pacific Theater. After his retirement from the Navy career, he began work for the State of Rhode Island, in what was then known as the Department of Employment Security, and assisted veterans with job placement. He worked for the state for 15 years, mostly as a veteran?s employment interviewer. John was also a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus, having reached the Third and Fourth Degree in the Middletown branch. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve. But it was his love of music that kept him busy in retirement. An avid record collector, he especially enjoyed Glenn Miller and was a member of the Glenn Miller Society of England. He is survived by his wife Frances of 57 years, and three daughters Joanne Roberts of North Dartmouth, MA, Jayne Giampietro of Fall River, MA, Janeen Nelson of Tiverton, RI, four grandchildren Jeff Roberts of Fall River, Ma, Leslie Roberts of Dennis, Ma, Rebecca Roberts of North Dartmouth, Ma, and Elizabeth Wilson of Narragansett, RI and two great grandchildren; one brother William Giampietro of Peabody, MA, and a sister Theresa DEntremont of Malden, MA. He was preceded in death by a sister Anna Gentile and a brother Michael GiampietroHis funeral will be held Tuesday, July 12 at 10:30am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Monday, July 11 from 4-8pm in the funeral home.
