John Gomes

Newport, RI - John Gomes, 97, of 33 Gould Street Newport, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of the late Lauretta Chase Gomes. Born in Portsmouth, RI on November 17, 1907, he was the son of the late Antonio and Anna Rosa Gomes. Mr. Gomes was a truck driver for the former Standard Wholesale for 25 years. He also worked at Almacs in East Providence, RI, as a warehouseman, retiring in 1969. Mr.Gomes was a member of the local #251 which is a truck drivers union, a member of Trinity Church and also enjoyed gardening and feeding the squirrels. He is survived by his son Raymond Gomes of Newport, RI, four daughters June Turner of Broken Bow, OK, Patricia M. Franco of Newport, RI, Ruth Alden of Waterford, MI, and Carol Manchester of Newport, RI, many grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren.He was the father of the late Manuel Gomes, John Gomes Jr., Robert Gomes and Barbara Flowers, and the brother of the late Benjamin E. Gomes, Antone Gomes, Manuel Gomes, Joseph Gomes, Jake Gomes, Frank Gomes, Rose Bothelo, Mary Oleveria and Annie Borden.His funeral will be held on Friday, February 25, 2005, at 11:00AM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
