John Grenville Winslow died peacefully at home in Newport, RI on September 15, 2011. He was 93 years old. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Helen Michalis Winslow, stepson W. Barton Baldwin, and step grandson Blair F. Baldwin Jr. He was predeceased by his stepson, Blair F. Baldwin, who passed away in 2005.Born in 1917, Mr. Winslows childhood was spent in New York City and Tuxedo, NY. Mr. Winslow attended The Buckley School in New York City and St. Georges School in Newport, RI. He worked at the National City Bank of New York now Citibank until 1940, when he enlisted in Squadron A of the New York National Guard. During World War II, he served in five campaigns across Europe, from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge, in the 448th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion attached to the 35th Infantry Division. Mr. Winslow was awarded the Bronze Star for leadership and courage. Following the War, Mr. Winslow returned to Citibank, where he had a long and successful career.Mr. Winslows greatest legacy is to the city of Newport, RI, where he was considered the foremost expert in the history of the town and the families who lived there. In the 1970s, Mr. Winslow played a key role in the revitalization of Newport as President of the Preservation Society of Newport. He also served as President of the Seamans Church Institute of Newport and as President of the Spouting Rock Beach Association Baileys Beach for 32 years. Mr. Winslow was recently awarded the Doris Duke Distinguished Steward Award by the Newport Restoration Foundation for his contributions to historic preservation in Newport. He was also an active member in the Newport Reading Room and the Newport Clambake Club.In New York, Mr. Winslow served as President of the Seamans Church Institute of New York and was on the Boards of the New York Historical Society and the New York Genealogical Society. Mr. Winslow was also a member of the Saint Nicholas Society, the Brook Club, and the Pilgrims.A memorial service will be held at Trinity Church in Newport, RI on a future date to be determined.
