Newport, RI - John H. Dieffenbach, 87, of Newport died Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Mary A. (Wholey) Dieffenbach.Born in Sayre, PA, he was the son of the late DeForest Dieffenbach and Marguerite (Montgomery) Dieffenbach Lendrum.John served in the Army Air Corp. during the Korean War. He worked as an electrical engineer for NUSC for over 35 years. He was involved in youth sports in Newport and served as coach of the American Legion #7 baseball team for many years. He is survived by his children Andrew C. Dieffenbach and his wife Linda of Cumberland, RI, Matthew J. Dieffenbach and his wife Rebecca of Hampton, VA, Linda K. Cruz of Newport, and Patricia L. McKinney and her husband Jay of Bel Air, MD. John was the grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of one. He is the brother of Robert Lendrum of Middletown, Richard Lendrum of Portsmouth and Pauline Bradley of Painted Post, NY and brother of the late C. Edward Dieffenbach and Edward Lendrum.A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 1:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
