Newport, John H. Galivan, 72 of Kay Street, Newport and of Albany, NY passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012 in Newport Hospital.He was the husband of Nancy S. Stiehler Galivan.Born in Albany, NY on June 19, 1939, he was the son of the late John and Mary Sullivan Galivan.Dr. Galivan received his BS in Pharmacy, Biology and Chemistry from Union University. He went on to receive his MS in Biology and Education from SUNY Albany and he received his PhD. from the Albany Medical College in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He then completed Post Doctoral studies at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA.Dr. Galivan became a research scientist for the NY Department of Health in the Wadsworth Research Center. There he held many titles including Director of Clinical Sciences, Molecular Medicine and Director of Research. He authored more than 150 books and scientific papers. His research for the most part was in the fields of cancer and cancer drugs. Dr. Galivan was also Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Albany Medical College and the Graduate School of Public Health at SUNY Albany. After a long career Dr. Galivan retired in 2003.Besides his wife he leaves his children Amanda Galivan of Scotia, NY, Brendan Galivan of Albany, NY, Julia Gregory of Albany, NY and Katherine Galivan of Denver, CO. John also leaves his step daughters Kim Thorin of Kuwait and Jennifer Akogo of Sandy, UT. He is survived by his sister Patricia McLean of Albany, NY and his two grandchildren Shannon Pierce and John Pierce both of Scotia, NY.Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society of Rhode Island, 931 Jefferson Blvd, Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886
