John Henry Paul

Portsmouth, RI - John Henry Paul, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008 in the Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, MA. He was the husband of Maybelle E. Flynn Paul of Portsmouth.Born in Saunderstown, RI on October 9, 1931, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary Lathan Paul.Mr. Paul retired from the Portsmouth School Department after 28 years. He held several different positions for the school department over the years, but is best known by the students from the Melville School when he was the school custodian.John was born in the Dutch Island Lighthouse off Saunderstown, where his grandfather was the lighthouse keeper. Thus John was born with a love of the ocean, and enjoyed fishing. Before the school department, he worked on a fishing boat for a few years. He also loved animals, always had pets at home, and was quick to help his friends and neighbors with their animals. He was a veteran of the US Army, and served during the Korean War. John was also a member of the Tiverton VFW.Beside his wife of 52 years, he leaves a son David Paul Roberts, and his wife Jana, of Oklahoma City, OK, and a sister Ann Calcutt of Portsmouth, RI. He also leaves one grandson, John David Roberts of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by two nieces, Beverly Kelly and Dory Calcutt, and a nephew Robert Miller, as well as several great nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held Monday, June 16, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00pm in the Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road Portsmouth. A Memorial Service will be held Monday evening at 7:30pm in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be Tuesday, June 17 in Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Ave, Portsmouth.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ASPCA Triburtes, 520 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018.
