Harrington Portsmouth, RI - John Joseph Harrington, 87, of 140 Adams Drive Portsmouth, died Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI.He was the husband of Mary Kane Harrington for 61 years. Born in Fall River, MA on Nov. 30, 1917, he was the son of the late John P. Harrington and Mary Ellen McGuire Harrington. Mr. Harrington was a Lawyer with Harrington Harrington, Fall River, MA. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, Bristol County Bar Association, Fall River Bar Association, and was licensed to practice in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. Graduating president of his class in 1935 from B.M.C. Durfee High School, he earned highest honors from Brown University in 1939, was awarded Phi Beta Kappa, and received his law degree from Boston University in 1942. A World War II combat officer, he was later recognized by B?nai Brith for his participation in the liberation of Bergen-Belson. Following the war he was assigned to the U.S. Army Attorney General?s Office to help prosecute war crimes in Germany.Practicing in Fall River for over half a century, he was First Assistant District Attorney in Bristol County for a decade, argued before courts throughout Southern New England and was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bristol County Bar Association. Cited throughout his career in Who?s Who in American Law, his name is permanently inscribed in the hearts of his family. Mr. Harrington was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus and a former Town Solicitor of Westport, MA. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kane Harrington of Portsmouth, RI, Son John J. Harrington of Medfield, MA, Son James K. Harrington of Bethel Park, PA, Son William J. Harrington of Glendale, AZ, Son Attorney Robert K. Harrington of Portsmouth, RI, Daughter Dr. Mary Angela von der Lippe Jordan of New York, NY, Granddaughter Attorney Jennifer J. Galego of Norton, MA, Granddaughter Attorney Jill K. Harrington of Bethel Park, PA, Grandson Christopher C. Von Der Lippe of Bedford, NH, Grandson Peter John Harrington of Medfield, MA, Grandson Robert J. Harrington of Portsmouth, RI, Granddaughter Christiane H. Harrington Portsmouth, RI, Greatgranddaughter Jessica J. Galego Norton, MA, Greatgrandson Justin J. Galego Norton, MA. His is preceded in death by a brother, Thomas E. Harrington.His funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, at 9:00 AM from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
