LONG TIME EXECUTIVE FOR THE BOSTON HERALD Middletown, RI - John J. OMalley, 80, of 1084 Green End Avenue Middletown, formerly of Dorchester, MA, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Maria C. Lalli OMalley. Born in Boston, MA on January 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Margaret M. Turner OMalley. Mr. OMalley served in the Army Air Corps, during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a graduate of Mission Hill High School, and attended Burdett Business School and Boston University. Mr. OMalley was a sales executive for the Boston Herald Traveler, the Boston Herald American, and the Boston Herald for 41 years, retiring in 1987. After his retirement from the newspaper he went to work for Viking Tours of Newport as a limousine driver. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in the Boston Area, an assistant state director and state media consultant of AARP, a former chairperson and secretary of the Middletown Senior Center, a member of the Edward King House Senior Center and a member of the Middletown Charter Commission. Mr. OMalley was a communicant of St. Marys Church in Newport, and also an usher and eucharistic minister. He was a lector at Salve Regina College. Mr. OMalley performed the duties of Eucharistic Minister at Heatherwood Nursing Home and also at the Newport Hospital. Besides his wife of 32 years, he is survived by his son John M. OMalley of Braintree, MA, two daughters Nancy Callery of Long Island, NY, and Kathleen OMalley-Taylor of Quincy, MA, and three grandchildren.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at 9:00 AM from the Hambly Funeral Home Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport.
