John James Medeiros, 65, of Middletown passed away unexpectedly, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI. He was the husband of Rosemary (Silveira) Medeiros.Born on August 21, 1950 in Fall River, MA, he was the son of the late John J. and Laura Medeiros.John grew up in Portsmouth, on Freeborn Street and was a 1969 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He was a graduate of RI College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Education and later his Master's in Education. John married Rosemary Silveira on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1982. Known for his friendly smile and gentle manner, John had many friends. John began his teaching career at Jesus Saviour School, went on to St. Philomena's and then entered a long career at Middletown Public Schools, as an elementary teacher for 21 years, retiring in 2011. For the last 17 years he has been known for his work at the Middletown Stop Shop deli. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Lay Carmelites and the Middletown Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed puzzles, family games, playing classical guitar, and was an avid reader of religious literature. He was an active communicant of Jesus Saviour Church and a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.Besides his wife of 33 years, he is survived by his children, John J. Medeiros Jr. of Middletown, and Elizabeth Medeiros of Swansea, MA, his sister Carol Figerie of Middletown, his mother and father in-law, Gladys and Manuel D. Silveira Jr. of Middletown, several brother and sister in-laws, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016, from 4:00-8:00 in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 9:00am, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840 or to the American Diabetes Association, 222 Richmond Street, Suite 204, Providence, RI 02906.
