Newport, RI - John Jemo, 96, formerly of 14 Summer Street, Newport, RI, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the John Clarke Health Care Center in Middletown.He was the husband of Helen Romaine Jemo. Born in Frackeville, PA on June 23, 1913, he was the son of the late Metro and Pearl Peraska Jemo.Mr. Jemo served in the United States Marine Corp during peacetime. He was the Head Chef at the Newport Naval Hospital for 35 years before retiring. In his youth, John achieved Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America in September of 1929. He was a communicant of St. Josephs Church in Newport. Nothing pleased him more then spending time with his family. In addition to his wife of 72 years, he is survived by his sons, Paul Jemo of Lakeside, CA, Thomas Jemo and his wife Eve of North Scituate, RI and Stephen Jemo and his wife Michelle of Middletown, RI, his daughter-in-law Sandra Sam Silvia of Middletown, RI; ten grandchildren, Stacey OHanley, John Jemo, Julie Faucher, Jeff Jemo, Kelly Jemo, Thomas Jemo, Nicholas Jemo, Stephen Jemo, Jr., Kevin Jemo and Elizabeth Jemo; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the oldest of thirteen children and is survived by Andrew Jemo, Ann Smolevich, Mary Trishman and Martha Caputo, all of Hazelton, PA.He was the father of the late John and Peter Jemo. His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 8:30 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport.Burial with military honors will follow in St. Columba Cemetery Chapel in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Saturday morning from 7:30 to 8:30 am in the funeral home.Donations in his memory may be made to Camp Kyle for Children with Diabetes, PO Box 1525, Fall River, MA, 02722 or to the John Clarke Activities Fund, 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
