John Bettencourt PORTSMOUTH, RI - John Bettencourt, 77, of 213 Old Mill Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Lena M. Santos Bettencourt. Born in Portsmouth, RI, on August 13, 1927, he was the son of the late John O. and Mary Perry Bettencourt.Mr. Bettencourt had worked as an equipment operator for Peckham Brothers of Middletown, for 41 years, retiring in 1992. He had also worked at the Green Acre Dairy as a farmhand for 10 years, as a welder for Thomas Crawford in Newport for 5 years and at the Providence Gas Company as a lawn maintenance caretaker for 30 years. Mr. Bettencourt was a Communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth and was an avid gardener. Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by the daughters Linda L. Mello of Portsmouth, RI, Sharon M. Jenkins of Virginia Beach, VA, and Marie V. Levada of Middletown, RI, a sister Rose Pine of Middletown, RI, three sons in law Jeffrey L. Mello of Portsmouth, RI, Mark Jenkins of Virginia Beach, VA, and Alan Levada of Middletown, RI, four grandchildren Jennifer Viveiros, Benjamin Jenkins, Gregory Levada, and Alison Levada, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Andrew Bettencourt.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, from 5-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
