John Julian Callahan, Jr

Portsmouth, R.I. - John Jack Julian Callahan, Jr., 73, of 2368 East Main Road, Portsmouth, R.I., died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Kimwell Nursing Home, Fall River, MassachusettsHe was the husband of the late Leah Jaramillo Callahan.Born in New London, Conn. on July 9, 1935, he was the son of the late John Lefty Julian and Agatha Gay Billodeau Callahan.Jack served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He moved to Portsmouth in 1964 and throughout his life was active in Portsmouth youth sports activities, the local Democrat party as well as the Lions Club. He served three terms as the President of the Portsmouth Lions Club and served as the District Governor of Rhode Island Lions District 42 from 1995-1996. He also served as a member of the Portsmouth School Committee. From 1964 until 1975 Jack was employed by the Raytheon Company. Subsequently Mr. Callahan was employed by the State of Rhode Island. His sons John J. Callahan III, of Sewell, NJ and Michael P. Callahan of Portsmouth, RI, survive him. Two grandchildren John Stenning Callahan of Voorhees, NJ and Elizabeth Beth Anne Callahan of Drexel Hill, PA and a brother Dale Callahan of New London, CT also survive him. Jack had many nieces and nephews and loving friends.His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 6:00pm, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2009, from 4:00-6:00pm, in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the Phoenix House Exeter Center, 251 Main Street Exeter, RI 02822.
