John Matthew Smith

John M. Smith, 75, of Sprague Street, Portsmouth, RI, died Thursday, June 14, 2012 at home. Born in New York, NY on May 17, 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Alice (Gilmore) Smith.Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 33 years before retiring in 1992.He is survived by his daughter, Deborah A. McGowan of Portsmouth, RI; his sister, Mary Conroy of New Jersey; his granddaughter, Alysan McGowan Roach of Portsmouth, RI, his nieces, Geralyn Conroy Kysar of Connecticut and Jennifer Conroy Nathan of New Jersey; and his friend and former wife, Vita R. (Dinin) Smith. He was the brother of the late Thomas J. Smith, Jr. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 3 pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Calling hours will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 1-3 pm in the funeral home prior to the funeral service.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to New England Organ Bank, 60 1st Street, Waltham, MA 02451.
