John W. D. Carpenter, Jr

John William Daniel Carpenter, Jr., 88, of 87 Girard Ave, formerly of Coddington St, Newport, RI, died Friday, September 3, 2010, at St. Clare Home, Newport, RI. Born in Newport, RI on August 20, 1922, he was the son of the late John William Daniel and Ruth Jenkins Carpenter.Mr. Carpenter served in the US Army during World War II, involved in the activites in the Philippines. After the war, he worked at the William B. Clarke Publishing Co., the James L. Maher Center, Dugan Bros., and retired from the Newport Daily News. He was a member of the VFW, the Fleet Reserve, and a long time member of the former Trinity Lodge of Elks 183 in Newport. Mr. Carpenter loved baseball, especially following the Red Sox. He had a great sense of humor and a warm, happy personality. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.He is survived by sister Dolores Means of Middletown, his sister Eleanor Weston of Middletown, his aunt Sarah Jenkins of Newport, many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends.He is preceded in death by his brother, Ellis Carpenter, and his sisters, Grace Smith, Ruth Evangelista, and Laura Collier.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 8, at 12:00 noon in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
