Jose S. Salas

Jose S. Salas, 51, died unexpectedly in Wellington, New Zealand. En route from Australia to French Polynesia and Hawaii, Jose had just completed his dream of visiting all seven continents. Born in Newport RI March 2, 1963, he was the son of the late Francisco Sablan Salas and Maria (Lombard) Salas of Middletown RI. He was a 1981 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1987 graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in business administration majoring in marketing and finance. He then went to the Fashion Institute of Technology earning a degree in production management. After graduation, he began to work for Bren Corporation in Cranston, RI as a production manager. In 1990 Jose returned to Newport to manage the family business, Salas' Dining Room, with his brother Frank and sister in-law Sally until it's closing in 2012. After this trip he had planned to relocate and return to a career in production management. Jose is survived by his son Paul of Middletown RI, his older brothers, Francisco (Frank) of Newport RI and Rick of New York City. He also leaves behind his "Auntie" Dorothy Farrell, nephew Damian and nieces Tonya Salas Mello, Maren Salas, great-nephew Luke Mello and great-niece Haley Mello all of Newport RI and cousins, the Clearys, the Farrells, the Aguons, the Lombards and the Babarows. Jose's extended family included Maureen and Justin Lipata, Lisa Rego, Julia Mahoney, the staff at Salas' and of course many friends who he loved and loved him. We will all miss him and keep his spirit alive in our laughter. Thank you Jose for all that you gave us. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, from 4:00-7:00p.m. His funeral will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014, at 12:00p.m., in the Memorial Funeral Home.
