Newport, RI - Joseph Anthony Goo GooBrown, 49, of 9 Park Holm, Newport, RI, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI.He was the son of Jeannette Oliveira of Newport. Born in Newport, RI on September 11, 1959, he attended area schools and was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1978. Joseph was active in sports throughout school and had also played sports at the Boys Club and for the Kings Boys. He served in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1985. After returning to Newport, Joe worked for several area businesses as a painter and carpenter. He also worked for J.J. Webb and the Mayflower Moving Company.Joe enjoyed competing in all types of sports including basketball, baseball and football. He had coached little league baseball and he had served in the local drum and bugle corps known as the Black Militia. He was an avid fisherman and history buff. Joe was an excellent cook and loved old school music. He loved children. He was a volunteer for the Park Holm Vegetable Giveaway-Pantry Express. Joe was an enthusiastic New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan.Besides his mother, he is survived by his son Randy Hall, of Providence, his brothers Leonard Brown, Jr. of Newport and Timothy Brown of Oxnard, CA, his sister Bonita Fowlkes of Newport, four grandchildren, his maternal grandmother, Maria Graham, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Joe will be greatly missed. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11:00am, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Tuesday morning from 9-11am in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, 398 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
