He was the husband of Kathleen McNutt Sylvia. Born in Tiverton, RI on July 24, 1913, he was the son of Leon Sylvia and Antonia Sylvia. Mr. Sylvia owned and operated the former Joes Sunoco Service Station on Memorial Blvd. in Newport and after he sold his business he worked at the Raytheon Corporation and later at Salve Regina University where he retired in 1993. He served in the U.S.Navy during WW II in the South Pacfic and the Aleutian Islands.Joseph was a communicant of St. Lucy Church in Middletown and enjoyed hunting and fishing over the years.. He is survived by his wife of Fifty five years Kathleen McNutt Sylvia of Middletown, RI, Son Robert J. Sylvia of Middletown, RI, Daughter Barbara A Sylvia of Pawtucket, RI, Grandson Robert J Sylvia Jr of Middletown, RI, Grandson David M Sylvia of Colorado Springs, CO, Granddaughter Abbe A Besse of Assonet, MA, Three Sisters, Emily Curry of Florida Vera Loren of , Florida; Mary Shea of Newport, RI, and Two Great Grandchildren . His funeral will be held , at 8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI , with a Mass of Christian burial at in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown at 9:00 am . Burial will be in the family grave in Hillside Cemetery in Tiverton.
