Joseph F. DeCosta, 89, of 86 Bayview Park, Middletown, RI, formerly of South West Miami, FL, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Charlton Hospital in Fall River, MA.Born in Newport, RI on December 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Antone and Georgianna (Pacheco) DeCosta.Joseph was US Marine Corp veteran of WWII having served in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. For 26 years, Joseph worked at the Key Biscayne Hotel in Miami, until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Vasco Da Gama Holy Ghost Society, Seven Castles Club, and was an avid golfer and was a past member of Wanumetonomy Country Club and Green Valley Country Club. He was also a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. He was a talented gardener and a five time winner of the Newport In Bloom award for his work in gardens at the Vasco da Gama Club. As a longtime Miami resident, he remained a true Miami Dolphins fan.He is survived by his sister Gilda DeCosta of Portsmouth, RI, and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his brothers, Jesse DeCosta, Anthony DeCosta, Edmund DeCosta, William DeCosta, and his sisters, Mary Dias and Alice DeCosta Massed.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.His funeral will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 9:00am from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Vernon Avenue and Broadway, Newport, RI.
