Portsmouth, RI - Joseph Francis Marshall, 89, of 355 Mail Coach Road, Portsmouth, RI, died on Thursday, August 18, 2011, surrounded by his family, in the Westerly Nursing Home, Westerly, RIHe was the husband of the late Mary Marchese Marshall. Born in Newport, RI on July 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Mateos Marshall.Mr. Marshall attended Rogers High School and left high school to join the United States Navy during World War II, and served in the Silent Service aboard the submarines USS Growler, Finback, Stingray. He was on the Planning Board in Portsmouth for over 40 years, also the Budget Commission and an Electrical Inspector for the town of Portsmouth.He was very active in all aspects of Portsmouth Politics. Mr. Marshall was a supporter of the Newport Hospital. He is survived by his children, Raymond Marshall and his wife Katherine of Greenville, RI, Joseph F. Marshall, Jr. and his wife Josephine of Tucson, AZ, Barbara A. Abbot and her husband David of Ledyard, CT, and Mary J. Marshall of Foxboro, MA, his sisters Dorothy Moniz of Middletown, RI, and Ann Hunter of San Diego, CA, and his grandchildren, Kristin Marshall Wilkerson and her husband Dwain and their son J.D., Kerri Marshall Smith and her husband Jason and their daughter Maliah, and Michaelangelo and Rayna Marshall. He was the brother of the late Frank Marshall, William Marshall, Mary Oliver Carr, Helena Lee Olsen, Marion Marshall, Isabelle Lapane, Alice Kinnear, Gladys Marshall, Irene Carvelho Duffy, Evelyn Whittaker.Calling hours will be held on Sunday August 21, 2011 from 4-7pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral will be held on Monday August 22, 2011 at 10:00am in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to Newport Hospital Foundation, Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840, or Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island 143 Main St Wakefield, RI 02879
