Newport, - Joseph F. ?Joe Cement? Moniz Sr., 89, of 487 Thames Street, Newport, died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of the late M. Natalie Stepp Moniz. Born in Portsmouth, RI on March 31, 1914, he was the son of the late Joseph Francis and Maria Pacheco Moniz. Mr. Moniz was a lifelong resident of Newport. Mr. Moniz had worked as a carpenter for James L. Maher and other various companies in the Newport area for many years, retiring in 1976. He had also worked at the former Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island. He was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII. After his retirement he enjoyed making miniature furniture and lighthouses for his family and friends. Mr. Moniz was an avid lover of the ocean. He is survived by two sons Joseph Francis Moniz Jr. of Middletown, RI, and Bruce A. Moniz Sr. of Middletown, RI, three daughters Margaret M. ?Peggy? Ribera of Durham, CT, Paula L. Molloy of Portsmouth, RI, and Diane G. Ribera of Cromwell, CT, a brother Jesse Moniz of Middletown, RI, four sisters Evelyn Santos of Middletown, RI, Gloria Medeiros of Newport, RI, Ethel Crotteau of Newport, RI, and Olive Escobar of Newport, RI, 16 grandchildren, and 17 Great Grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Warren Anthony ?Buster? Moniz, Joanne Owens, and Linda A, Moniz, and brother of the late Theresa Warner, Grace Perry, and Emily Lowden.His funeral will be held Thursday, October 23, 2003, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
