Portsmouth, RI - Joseph Francis Sylvia, 89, of 26 Debra Drive, Portsmouth, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at home.He was the husband of the late Alexandria Pasquale Sylvia. Born in Newport, RI on January 9, 1915, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Mary Rosa Sylvia. Mr. Sylvia served in the United States Navy during World War II on carriers in the Pacific Theatre. He worked for the former IVG Construction Company for 20 years and then went to work for Mr. Ralph Gunning on his estate ?Normandie? around the Ocean Drive, as a maintenance director and electrician. He is survived by his son Joseph F. Sylvia of Portsmouth, RI, his daughter Carolyn Bernardin of Evansville, IN, his brother Albert Sylvia of New Bedford, MA, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.He was the brother of the late Frank J. Sylvia.His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
