Joseph George Farias, 76, of East Main Road, Portsmouth died on Friday, August 8 at Newport Hospital. Joseph was the husband of the late Josephine Moniz Farias.Born March 18, 1932 in Portsmouth, RI on his familys farm, to Domingo and Lucy Rezendez Farias. Joseph worked for the majority of his career as a Heavy Equipment Operator. Over the years he worked throughout RI and Mass for several companies, including Reese Construction, KRR Construction, Cawley Construction and Aquidneck Construction, as well as several more. He earned the nickname Smokin Joe while working construction for so many years. When he wasnt driving, he was often taking care of his garden, a hobby he continued after growing up on a farm. He also worked as a quahogger in between jobs.Joseph was a member of the Seaconet Sportsmans Club and the Portsmouth Portuguese American Club, and he really enjoyed country music. He and his wife would go dancing every weekend at the Golden Dream. He also was a stock car fan, and often brought the family up to the Seekonk Speedway for Sunday races. Mr. Farias is survived by his children Michael Steven Farias of Portsmouth, George Bryant Farias Paula of Miami, FL, Cheryl Ann Farias of Portsmouth, and Tia Marie Hebert Kevin of Portsmouth. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Steven Farias Sr., Morgan Farias and Brittany Faucher, and seven great grandchildren. He also has several nieces and nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by a brother Domingo Farias and a sister Evelyn Scott.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 13 from 4:00-8:00pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 14 at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Barnabas Church, East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial with military honors will be in Newport Memorial Park.
