Portsmouth, RI - Joseph Lopes, Jr., 66, of 2339 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Newport, died Monday, January 28, 2008 at home. Born in Newport, RI on August 13, 1941, he was the son of Francis Silveira of Portsmouth, RI, and the late Dorothy Silvia Silveira and the late Joseph Lopes.Mr. Lopes was Chief of Maintenance for the Mt. Hope Bridge for 13 years and also worked at the Newport and Jamestown Bridge. He was a member of the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club. Joe loved music and playing the guitar and singing. He is survived by his children Laurie A. Goyette of Portsmouth, RI, Susan M. Ring of Middletown, RI, Amy-Jo Akervik of Warren, RI, Michael J. Lopes of East Greenwich, RI and Francis J. Lopes, his brother Joseph Lopes of Portsmouth, RI, his sister Sharon Costa of Tiverton, RI, and his grandchildren Gregory Ring, Brittney Ring, Kenneth Goyette, Andrew Goyette, Olivia Akervik, Gavin Akervik, Krystal Lopes, Brandon Lopes, Francis Lopes and Brooke Lopes. His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 11:00am, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will take place in Portsmouth Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008, from 5-8pm in the funeral home.
