Joseph M. Bettencourt

Middletown, RI - Joseph M. Bettencourt, 58, of 136 Fenner Avenue, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the home of his son, Anthony, in Middletown, RI, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Mary Theresa Silva Bettencourt. Born in Calhetas, Sao Miguel, Azores, on December 20, 1949, he was the son of the late Joseph Moniz and Deolinda Mourato Bettencourt.Mr. Bettencourt had worked in the maintenance department at the US Naval Base, for 28 years, retiring in 1997. He was a Communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. Mr. Bettencourt was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Bettencourt had immigrated to the USA in 1966. He is survived by a son Anthony J. Bettencourt and his wife Melinda of Middletown, RI, a daughter Susan Ruhle and her husband Philip of Peacedale, RI, two sisters Stella Goveia of Newport, RI, and Christina Bettencourt of Montreal, Canada, and four grandchildren Brianna Bettencourt, Alexis Bettencourt, Philip Ruhle, and Patrick Ruhle. He was also the brother of the late Joseph Mourato Bettencourt.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2008, from 5-8 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
