Joseph Peter Dermody Middletown, RI ? MMCS, Joseph Peter Dermody USN, Ret., 85, formerly of Sandy Point Avenue and Aquidneck Ave, Portsmouth, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at his daughters home in Middletown, where he had lived for the last several years. He was the husband of Barbara Ann Tempesta Dermody. Born in Northville, MI on December 13, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas and Harriett Barnes Dermody.Master Chief Joseph Dermody, USN Ret. served for over 30 years. His service spanned WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a graduate of the Wentworth Institute and Newport Deslant Engineering School. Throughout his Naval career he spent many years at sea managing and maintaining ships engines and machinery. He also was an instructor at the Deslant Engineering School in Newport. After his career in the armed forces, he worked at the Newport Hospital in their facilities engineering department. Mr. Dermody loved and enjoyed his family. Both he and his wife were very active in their grandchildrens sports and extra curriculum programs. He was rarely idle. Both he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV, or he could be found in the workshop where he enjoyed working with wood and metal. If a neighbor needed something built, he was there with a helping hand. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Ann Dermody of St. Elizabeth Manor, Bristol R.I., two daughters, Joan L. Dermody and her partner, Paulette A. Gagnon of Fall River, Ma., Barbara Di Marco and her husband, William, of Middletown, five grandchildren Norman P. Bailey Jr.and his wife, Laura, Jennifer J. Bailey, John J. Di Marco, William Di Marco III, and Dana Di Marco, and her husband, Fred, as well as two great Grandchildren Gabriel J. Bailey and Avia R.Di Marco-Schweizer. He is also survived by a sister in-law, Sybil Rachrenok of Green Valley, AZ., a brother in-law, Francis H.Tempesta of New York City and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service with military honors will be Wednesday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
