JOSEPH SALVATORE SCALDINO, 94, born February 8, 1921 in Newport passed away December 21, 2015 at Newport Hospital. Joseph served in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Banks near Boston at the end of the war. After leaving military service he was employed for many years in the administrative services area of the Naval Hospital in Newport until his retirement. In his youth was a barber at his father's barbershop on Thames Street. Joseph was the husband of Norma May Sterneman of Newport having been married for 66 years. He was the son of late Joseph Salvatore Scaldino, Sr. and Nellie Louise Tew. He was also the brother of the late Elizabeth F. Cummings. He is survived by his daughter Linda M. Therrien and her husband Brad of California and his son Robert B. Scaldino of Texas.Joe was a passionate gardener raising flowers and vegetables in his back yard and was extremely proud of the variety of tomatoes he grew each year. As a young man Joe was an avid baseball player and played for many years in the old Cardines Field League of the 1930's and 40's earning the nickname of "Bubba". Upon their marriage in 1949, Joe and Norma temporarily lived in the residence section of the Newport Jail on Marlboro Street where Norma's father was the jailer and her mother made the meals for the prisoners.
