Joseph Smith Hurlburt

North Hutchinson Island, - Joseph Smith Hurlburt, 65, of 5051 North A1A #T-6 North Hutchinson Island, FL, formerly of Newport, RI, died Monday, October 13, 2003 at the home of his daughter. Born in Bridgeport, CT on September 23, 1938, he was the son of Mildred Frances Cellar Hurlburt of Barefoot, Bay, FL and the late Joseph Edward Hurlburt. Mr. Hurlburt graduated from Holy Cross in 1960 and was commissioned as a Naval Officer on graduation day. He obtained his masters degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He is a veteran of the Vietnam war and served as Executive Officer, then Commanding Officer of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS ?Goldsborough?, based in Pearl Harbor, HI. Mr. Hurlburt then spent many years at the Naval War College as a student and teacher before his promotion to Assistant Chief of Staff of Operations of the Atlantic 3rd Fleet, again based in Pearl Harbor. He was the Squadron Commander of Destroyer Squadron 24 out of Jacksonville, FL, then returing to Newport as Assistant Chief of Staff of Naval War Gaming until his retirement from the Navy in 1988. Mr. Hurlburt spent the next 10 years consulting as a War Gaming Specialist until his full retirment in 1998. He volunteered with the Learn to Read Program in Florida, at the Manatee Service Center in Florida and at the Ft. Pierce Yacht Club in Florida. He also served on the Board for the Atlantic View Condominium Association in Florida. He formerly served as Commadore of the Navy Yacht Club in Newport. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed golf and tennis. Besides his mother he is survived by his son TJ Hurlburt of Newport, RI, his daughter Lisa Hurlburt Kinsella of Newport, RI, and his grandson Cole Kinsella of Newport, RI.A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at 10:00AM, in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 222 Richmond Street, Suite 200, Providence, RI 02903-4253. Arrangements are by the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
