Newport, - Joseph ?Perky? Soeira, 82, of 39 Farewell Street, ?Mumford Manor? Newport, formerly of Morrison Ave, Middletown, died Friday, April 18, 2003 at Miriam Hospital Providence, RI. He was the companion of Anna Bettencourt. Born in Middletown, RI on June 9, 1920, he was the son of the late William Soeira and Maria Almeida Soeira. Mr. Soeira, known as ?Perky?, served in the Army during World War II. He received a Purple Heart for injuries during the invasion of Normandy. For years he worked as a carpenter around Newport, most recently for Tom Yeoman. He was known for fine finish carpentry. He is survived by his companion of over 50 years Anna Bettencourt of Newport, RI, a sister Julia Jordan of Middletown, RI, and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late John Soeira, William Soeira, Alberta Anderson, Georgiana Nasser, and Mary Dorothy Silvia. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at 1:00 PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
