Joseph T. Lyons, Sr

Middletown, RI - Joseph T. Lyons, Sr., 86, of 9 Collins Terrace, Middletown, RI, died on March 1, 2011 at home. Born in Somerville, MA on January 12, 1925, he was the son of the late Evelyn Lyons of Somerville MA, and brother of the late Thomas Gordon Smith.Mr. Lyons served in the United States Navy for 24 years and was a veteran of World War II. Later, he worked for Raytheon Sub-Sig Division; the Newport Shipyard and the Naval Hospital before retiring in 1988. He was a proud member of the Retired Enlisted Association; the Fleet Reserve; the Navy Memorial Foundation and the Veterans of Foreign War. He was the husband of the late Wilma K. Luecht Lyons and is survived by his children, Joseph T. Lyons, Jr. of Scituate, MA; Michael P. Lyons of Madison, NJ; Cynthia J. Barker of Tucson, AZ; Kathleen W. Mello of Portsmouth, RI; Daniel F. Lyons of Middletown, RI; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 10th, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial with Military Honors, will be held at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown on Friday, March 11th, 2011 at 10am.Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
