Josephine M. Barry, in her 95th year, of Middletown, RI, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis J. Barry for 52 years. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Barry Sweet of Middletown, RI, and Patricia Barry Pettit of Paget, Bermuda, her two granddaughters, Elise Sweet Brady and husband Michael M. Brady of Newton, MA and Patricia Sortwell Sweet of Cambridge, MA. She is also survived by Peter S. Sweet of Newport, RI.The second oldest of ten children she is also survived by Helen Atkinson, Emily Quinn, Rose Sipowicz, Edward Ochmanski and Elizabeth Kidder and sister-in-law Mary H. Barry. She was preceded in death by her brothers Frank Ochmanski, Stanley Ochmanski, Louis Ochmanski, and Charles Ochmanski and brother-in-law Robert E. Barry.Born November 8, 1917 in Augusta, ME, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Michalina (Popowicz) Ochmanski, who emigrated together to the US in the late 1800s from Poland.As a young woman, she was as an ATT operator and later a supervisor. After her marriage, she and her husband settled in Middletown and built a loving life dedicated to their family.She was an active volunteer in local Democratic politics, Catholic Charities, and the March of Dimes where she coordinated Newport area campaigns. Josephine was a member of the Seaside Garden Club, the Catholic Daughters and also gave generously of her time to her children's activities. She was also a longtime parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Newport and a member of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum. Josephine's creativity was expressed in all facets of her life with her vivacious spirit transcending generations.Calling hours will be held on, Friday, September 7, 2012 , from 4:00-7:00 PM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at 10:00AM with a Mass of Christian in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.Memorial donations may be made to Grand Islander Center, 333 Green End Avenue, Middletown, RI, 02842, Newport Hospital, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840 or St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
