Josephine M. Furtado

Josephine (Roderick) Furtado, 95, of Sprague Street, Portsmouth died Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Grand Islander, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Manuel C. Furtado. Born in Bristol, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Roderick and the late Mary (Da Ponte) Roderick. She was the loving mother of Irene Cosgrove of Portsmouth, Helen Mathieu of Portsmouth and Newport, and Manuel P. Furtado of Middletown. She is survived by her granddaughters, Lisa St. Ours and her husband Michael of Dartmouth, MA; Dr. Michele Mathieu and her husband Brian Walters of Narragansett; Rachel Barber of South Kingstown; and Julie Edinburgh and her husband Jason of Newport and England; also her grandson, Mark Mathieu of Newport.She was the beloved great-grandmother of Jessica, Jennifer and Michael St. Ours, Hazel Shea Mathieu, Emily and Jack Edinburgh, and Jamie and Ryan Barber.She is also survived by her aunt Amy Cotta and many loving cousins of the Cotta and Ferreira families of Portsmouth.Mrs. Furtado was a long-time communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth and especially enjoyed helping the kitchen staff prepare for the annual St. Barnabas Feast.As a founding member of the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Josephine (Jo) spent many happy hours as the Centers Senior trip planner and a volunteer in the Thrift shop. While she enjoyed the Senior Center as her second home, she was the happiest at family celebrations at the homes of her children and grandchildren where she reigned as the beloved matriarch of four generations.Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 4:00-7:00p.m., in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Her funeral will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 9:00a.m., from the Connors Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00a.m., in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Her burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, RI.
