Josephine Marie Mare, 90, of Derry, New Hampshire, formerly of Middletown, unexpectedly passed away at her home suddenly on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Born in Lawrence Mass. she was the daughter of the late Venerando Fichera and Rosina D'Agata Fichera, sister of the late Daniel Fichera of Hull Mass. Josephine, also known as Marie to many, was the wife of the late Manuel R Mare and mother of her late infant daughter Charlotte Rose Mare.She is survived by her son Gregory Mare and daughter Regina Mare-Griffith, son in law Thomas Griffith and three grandchildren Andrew, Daniel and Alison Griffith. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins.Josephine was a graduate of Boston University, Boston, Mass. Josephine also received a Master's in Education and Business from the University of Rhode Island and completed several graduate courses at Salve Regina University and Rhode Island College.Josephine was a dedicated, passionate educator and a retired Business teacher of 25 years at Middletown High School, Middletown, RI. Josephine previously taught at Burdett College, Boston MA., Newport Business and Secretarial School, Newport, RI and the Henry F. Anthony School, Portsmouth, RI. After her retirement, Josephine continued her passion as an educator as a substitute Business teacher at Middletown High School for fourteen years. Her former high school students would often visit Josephine at her Middletown home for pictures before proms and other special school occasions. Josephine was known for her unconditional kindness and caring by all who had the pleasure of knowing her throughout her long life. Josephine was a devout Catholic with unwavering faith in God. Josephine's greatest enjoyment was spending precious time with her three grandchildren. She shared her life as a loving grandmother and guiding influence on their lives from their birth to the present. Josephine was deeply loved by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed. Josephine was a member of several organizations including Court Madonna - Catholic Daughters of America, Sons of Italy American Forum, Portuguese American Federation, the Newport County, RI and National Retired Teachers Associations and Jesus Saviour Sodality. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 8:30 am at St Lucy's Church, West Main Road, Middletown, RI. Burial will follow in St. Columbas Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.Memorial donations may be made to Newport Hospital Birthing Center, Newport Hospital, 11 Friendship St., Newport RI 02840, or newporthospital.org.
