MIDDLETOWN, RI - Josephine Gomes Silvia, 87, of 749 Mitchells Lane, Middletown, RI, died Friday, August 5, 2005, at Miriam Hospital, Providence, RI. She was the wife of John Joseph Bernardo Silvia, Sr. Retired State Airport Employee for over 25 years. Born in Portsmouth, RI on May 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late James S. and Mary Matos Gomes. Josephine worked as a stock room marker at the former W. T. Grant?s, JC Penney and the former Lincoln Store. She had also been a seamstress in the Fall River Mills and was well known for her creative sewing, her flower beds and her preserves. She was a member of Jesus Saviour Church. Josephine had worked with her husband John on the Our Lady of Fatima Float at the St. Barnabas Church Feast where she and her sister in law were the seamstresss for the clothing on the statue. Besides her husband of 56 years, she is survived by her son John J.B. Silvia Jr. of Portsmouth, RI, her sisters Evelyn G. Fernandes of Middletown, RI, and Gertrude G. Narcizo of Sanduski, OH, and her grandsons John J.B. Silvia III and his wife Shawna of Danielson, Ct and James Silvia of Portsmouth, RI, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ernest Gomes, James Sousa Gomes Jr., John Sousa Gomes, Frank Sousa Gomes, Mary G. Escobar, Louis J. Gomes, Sadie G. Sousa, Elizabeth G. Lacerda and Anna B. Silvia. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at 9:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Memorial Funeral Home.
