PORTSMOUTH, RI - Karl H. Lyon, Sr., of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Stoneham, MA, died at Forest Farm Health Care Centre in Middletown, RI on May 28, 2005. He was the husband of Muriel Lindstrom Lyon.Born in East Bridgewater, MA on July 23, 1913, he was the son of the late Walter Kenneth Lyon and the late Carrie Spiller Lyon. Karl moved to Newport at the age of 5, and attended Newport Schools, and graduated from Rogers High School in 1932, where he was class president and football team captain. He continued his education at Rhode Island College and graduated in 1936 from what is now known as the University of Rhode Island. In 1938 he became a member of the Newport Police Department where he served for 7 years, and in 1949 he graduated from the Boston University Law School Evening Division, while working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Upon graduation from Law School he was employed at John Hancock Inusrance Company. He then went into private practice as an attorney, specializing in real estate law and family law, representing a number of Massachusetts banking institutions. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a member of the Somerville Rotary, honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as president of the Somerville Catholic Charities and of the Economy Club and was a board member of the Somerville Home for its Aged and the YMCA. He was an active member of Congregational churches in Melrose Highlands and Stoneham, MA and of the First Congregational Church in Cambridge, MA. Upon moving to Portsmouth, he was a member of the United Congregational Church in Middletown. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Muriel Lindstrom Lyon, RI, his son Karl H. Lyon Jr. and his wife Greer of Portsmouth, RI, his three grandchildren Lisa Lyon and husband, Keith Mathews of Portland, OR, Michelle Sullivan and her husband Paul of Middletown, RI, and Gregory K. Lyon and wife Michele B. Lyon of Framingham, MA, six great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He was the brother of the late Philip A. Lyon and Rev. Walter K. Lyon. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2005, at 3:00PM, in United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown. Burial will be private.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, from 5-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
