Kenneth R. Mattson, Captain, USNR (ret.) 93, of Portsmouth died peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Newport Hospital. Born on December 10, 1922 in Millville, MA, he was the son of the late Oscar and Anna (Sjoblad) Mattson. He was the brother of the late Carl L. Mattson, Mabel Mattson, Hilda Garen, Gladys Hauge, and Anna Mattson.Ken is survived by his wife of 70 years, Theresa A. (LaChance) Mattson, children Robert Mattson of Portsmouth, Lauren Knapp of Newport, Betsy Wasilewski of Portsmouth, Ingrid Mattson-Charnley of Falmouth, and Eric Mattson of Warren. Ken also leaves beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.Ken worked in sales throughout his lifetime, but was most proud of his service in the Navy. After graduating from the US Merchant Marine Academy, Ken served on active duty in both World War II and the Korean War. Following World War II, he joined the Navy Reserves, retiring in 1967 at the rank of Captain.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday October 19, 2016 from 4-7 pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. His funeral will be held on Thursday October 20, 2016 at 9:00AM from Connors Funeral Home, followed by his service at 10:00am in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport, RI. His burial will take place in St. Mary's Churchyard, East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840, or to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport , RI 02840.
