Kuno Nicholas Grosskurth, Jr., age 88, of Middletown died Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Grand Islander Health Care Center of Middletown, RI. Mr. Grosskurth was born July 31, 1927 in Paterson, NJ. He is the son of the late Kuno Nicholas Sr. and the late Sophie (Jahn) Grosskurth, He was married to Carol Anne Chamblee for 61 years. Mr. Grosskurth proudly served in the United States Navy for 27 years, serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired in Newport as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a graduate of Johnson Wales Culinary Institute. Mr. Grosskurth was a member of Portsmouth United Methodist Church and a member of the Middletown VFW Post #4487 and served as District Commander. He also helped run the post weekly Bingo program for many years. He was a past state commander of the VFW Department of Rhode Island. Mr. Grosskurth drove a school bus for the Portsmouth and Middletown School Department and worked as a chef at the Newport Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1988. He also ran the youth bowling league on the Newport Naval Base and was a troop leader of the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his wife: Carol Anne (Chamblee) Grosskurth, two daughters: Carolyn Spaulding of Portsmouth, RI, Nancy Miller of Juneau, Alaska and three sons: Harold Wesley Grosskurth of Horseheads NY, Kuno Nicholas Grosskurth, III of Portsmouth, RI, Eric Travis Grosskurth of Chapel Hill, NC; He leaves a sister and one brother: Louise Moenke of Brick, NJ and Alfred Karl Grosskurth of Burlington, MI; 11 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.Family and friends are invited to visiting hours from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday September 15, 2015 at Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday September 16, 2015 at Portsmouth United Methodist Church, 2732 East Main Road Portsmouth, RI 02871.
