Laurence Paul Butler

Newport, RI - Laurence Paul Butler, 86, of Newport, died Thursday, June 12, 2014 surrounded by his family at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Alberta May (Mendes) Butler. Born in Newport, RI on December 5, 1927, he was the son of the late John W. and Iva (White) Butler. He worked for The Newport Housing Authority from 1968 till he retired in 1990. Before that he was a driver for Sears Roebuck for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post #1268 until it was disbanded and he later joined the Author Burton Post $4487 in Middletown. He was also an avid puzzle maker. Besides his wife of 69 years, he is survived by his children, Carolyn Louise (Mendes) Payton, Pauline Florence (Butler) Reed, Iva May (Butler) Felton all of Newport, Lawrence Paul Butler of Hawaii, David Albert Butler of Newport, Alberta May (Butler) Bergado of Connecticut, and Robert James Butler of Hawaii, his siblings Gertrude Johnson, Emmett Butler, Paula Butler and Joseph Butler, twenty two grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.He was the father of the late Lorraine Sylvia (Butler) Neal.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014, from 11-12 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be follow at 12:00 PM.
