Laurence S. Peckham Jr

MIDDLETOWN - Laurence S. Peckham, Jr., age 85, of Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Heatherwood Nursing Home after a brief illness.Born in Newport, RI on July 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Goddard) Peckham and the late Laurence S. Peckham, Sr., both of Middletown, RI.Laurence grew up in Middletown. He attended and graduated from Fishburne Military School in 1947. He graduated in 1952 from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting. Following his graduation from URI, he served 4 years in the US Navy during the Korean War.Laurence worked for over 18 years at P.D. Humphreys in Tiverton as the Credit Manager. He also worked for over 20 years at the former Sheraton Islander on Goat Island in Newport. Later he worked at Hodges Badge in Portsmouth and finished his working years at Newport Grand Jai Alai before retiring.Laurence was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. He loved to travel and vacation in New Hampshire during Foliage Season.He leaves his devoted wife of 62 years, Dolores, his daughter Debra Lee of Middletown and his daughter Cynthia and her husband Benjamin Briggs of Portsmouth. He also leaves his four grandchildren, Shannon Lynch, Christopher Lynch, Caitlin and Tyler Briggs and his great-grandchildren Sean Smith and Avery Mendonsa. He is also survived by his sister Josephine Warden of Florida.Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home on Broadway in Newport. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Calvary United Methodist Church on Turner Road in Middletown at 10 a.m. followed by burial in the Four Corners Cemetery in Middletown.Memorial donations may be made to Potter League, P.O.
