Middletown, RI - Laurence V. "Bud" Turano, 93, of 446 Purgatory Lane, Middletown, RI, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Brown) Turano. Born in Newport, RI on April 11, 1919, he was the son of the late Peter A. and Theresa (Pascale) Turano. Mr. Turano served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II as a "Seabee". After the war he worked as a carpenter for Underwater Ordinance on the Navy Base until 1968. In 1974 he opened the Casino Indoor Racquet Club which he owned and served as the Tennis Pro for 25 years. After retiring from the club, he continued to give lessons at Howard Johnsons in Middletown. He belonged to and played tennis at the Tennis Hall of Fame and the Pop-Flack tennis courts. He also spent five years being the loving caregiver to his wife during her illness. He is survived by his son, Peter B. Turano and his wife Martha A. Turano of Middletown, RI, his daughter, Kit Laiho and her husband John W. Laiho, Jr., of Wakefield, RI, his grandchildren, Laurence M. Turano, Dennis B. Turano, Casey L. Turano, Jack W. Laiho, Shannon T. Laiho and Whitney C. Biles, his step grandchildren, Michele Camara, Stacy Roland, Tiffany Silvia, Martina Sanfilippo, his cousin, Fo Sisti of New York, ten great grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, his brother Francis Turano and his sisters Catherine Stidham and Mary Brown. His services are private. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
