Lawrence John Zarek

Portsmouth, RI - Lawrence Larry J. Zarek, LCDR, USN, RET 79, of 44 Lisa Terrace, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, June 20, 2008 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, MA. He was the husband of Margaret Peggy Barry Zarek. Born in Genoa, NB on May 22, 1929, he was the son of the late Killian and Adonia Rosno Zarek.Mr. Zarek served in the Navy for twenty nine years during the Korean and Vietnam Wars retiring in 1975. He was also an employee of Sears for seventeen years. He once served as the commander of the VFW Post 5390 and as President of the Portsmouth Lions Club. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association. Larry was a communicant of St. Lucys Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Circle of Friends. He was active in many volunteer groups on Aquidneck Island and enjoyed gardening and cooking. Besides his wife Peggy he leaves a daughter Adonia Guyette of Pennellville, NY, a brother Killian Zarek of Columbia, SC, two sisters Gertrude Aldridge of Georgia and Loretta Tetor of Bath, NY. He also leaves four grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 7:30am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held Tuesday evening from 5 - 8 pm in the funeral home.
