Lena Christine Whitaker Barratt, 91, of Newport, Rhode Island died Thursday, December 28, 2006, at Newport Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, George A. Barratt, by her children, Paul F. Barratt of Wakefield, RI, Judy Barratt Gross of Boulder, CO, Bruce Barratt and companion Margaret Hunt of Princeton, NJ, by two grandsons, Mica and Avrey Gross, and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was born on a farm in Bethany, Missouri on September 28, 1915, the daughter of Herbert and Hattie Rodgers Whitaker and one of six siblings, her beloved sister Ione Goff and her brothers Worth, Emmett, Herbert Jr., and John D. Whitaker, all predeceased. Lena and George lived near Princeton, NJ for many years, where they raised their family in a healthy rural environment. She imparted her enthusiasm and generosity to all. She was active in the Princeton Unitarian Church, the League of Women Voters, and the Cub Scouts, as well as an avid photographer and gardener. She worked and retired from Princeton University?s Firestone Library. After retiring, she and George moved to Newport, RI, where they opened and operated the Crystal Cove shop for 18 years. While Lena?s earthly wandering has ended, her memory lives on with those who knew and loved her.Services will be private.
