Leona (Hladen) Tripp

Leona (Hladen) Tripp of Newport died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital after a long illness. She was born August 24, 1942 to Walter and Anna (Horn) Hladen in Hamtramck, Michigan. She graduated from Wayne State University with a BA in English. She taught in Detroit and Anchorage schools. She met her husband in Anchorage, and they married in Detroit on August 8, 1970. She worked for the Newport Police Department for 23 years, including 16 years as the Chief's secretary. Leona loved to travel with her husband on cruses to Alaska and elsewhere. She enjoyed reading mysteries, knitting, playing cards and games. Leona adored all her cats. Leona was a devout member of St. Joseph's Parish in Newport.She is survived by her husband Eugene Tripp of Newport; sister in law Rosanne Beauchamp and her husband Richard of Richmond, MA; her niece Tania Powers of Northampton, MA; nephew Lance Beauchamp of Pittsfield, MA; great nephew Mitchell Beauchamp of Lanesboro, MA; great niece Opal Powers of Northampton, MA; great nephew Jarred Powers of Northampton, MA, and cousins in the Newport area Jeff and Tom Graeber, Anna Marie Shea and her husband Bill. She also has friends and cousins in Michigan.She was preceded in death by Patricia Zukowsky, Lenora Friend and Mary Van Camp.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 4:00-7:00pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 10:00am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport.
