Leopold N. "Leo" Ayotte, 89, of Newport, RI, died on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Village House Nursing Home in Newport. . He was the husband of the late Shirley Jane (Roberts) Ayotte.Born on May 17, 1926 in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late Henry and Roseanne (Goslin) Ayotte. Mr. Ayotte moved to Newport from New Bedford, MA, in 1942. He worked at the Newport Water Department from 1950 to 1980 and then for T. J. Brown Landscaping from 1980 to 1988. He also worked at the Mt. Hope Restaurant in Newport, the Barbados Caf, and Sam's Grocery Store in Middletown. Mr. Ayotte was a member of the United Veterans Council, Newport County, a life member and past commander of VFW Post #406 Newport, a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post #7 Newport, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Newport Council, and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians #1.He is survived by his son, Michael C. Ayotte of Newport, RI.He was predeceased by his siblings, Henry, Clifford, Rose, Diana and Flora.Visitation will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a service at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral home.Burial with Military Honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Newport Rescue Wagon Fund, 21 Marlborough Street, Newport, RI 02840 or to Visiting Nurse Service of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
