Leroy Evans Atkins

Middletown, RI - Leroy Evans Atkins, 78, of 3A Buck Road, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.He was the husband of the late Ann Toppa Atkins and Barbara Camara Atkins. Born in Zion, IL on April 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Elmer and Martha Bouck Atkins. He was one of seven children and will be sadly missed by his dear brother and friend Virgil Atkins of Long Beach, CA.Mr. Atkins worked on the original construction of the Newport Bridge, was employed by the Pier Restaurant, worked for the City of Newport and was a master carpenter. He also served in the US Navy. Leroy was an avid sports fan, cat lover and enjoyed painting. He is survived by his children, Roy Atkins and his wife Jean of Westerly, RI; Michael Atkins of Stuart, FL, Mark Atkins of Middletown, RI, and Gina Atkins of Middletown, RI, three stepchildren and six grandchildren.Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Private burial services for the family will be held on Thursday, December 2 at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, RI.In lie of flowers and Mass cards, the family wishes that donations be made in his honor to Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 70 Harrison Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
