Newport, RI - Letty Ray Church Quarry, 97, of St. Clare Home, Spring Street, Newport, formerly of 5 LaSalle Place, Newport passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, February 8. She was the wife of the late Newport Police Patrolman Robert N. Quarry Sr.Born in Newport, RI on September 2, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Ernest F. and Hazel Cobb Church.Letty graduated from Rogers High School, class of 1929, the Newport Business School in 1931 and was a secretary for A.L. Greenberg until she married in 1934. After raising her seven children she returned to work as a legal secretary for A.L. and Betty Greenberg, retiring at the age of 81.A member of St. Johns Church she served as treasurer for several years and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women of R.I. She was also a member of the Mayflower Society. Letty was an excellent seamstress and knitter, a lover of travel and a roller-coaster aficionado, still riding them into her seventies. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children grandchildren often going to Battery Park and the Blue Rocks on the PointShe is survived by children, Robert Quarry Jr. and wife Marlene of Gouverneur, NY, Ernest Quarry Sr. and his wife Carol of Middletown, George Quarry and his partner Claire Taylor of Newport, and Stephen M. Quarry and his wife Ann of Newport, Letty R. Champion and her husband Ronald of North Kingstown, RI, Ann E. Desjardin and her husband Henry of Shrewsbury, MA, and Patricia D. Dresser and her husband David of Newport, eighteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, three great-great grand children and several nieces and nephews.She was the sister of late Nancy C. Cox of Newport, RI, and Frances Flynn of Chesapeake, VA Her funeral will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in St. John The Evangelist Church, 61 Poplar Street, Newport. Burial will be in Braman Cemetery.Calling hours will be held Friday February 12th from 4:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Clare Home, 309 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840 or St. John The Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport, RI 02840
