Newport, - Leverich Hiscox, 89, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Village House Newport, RI. He had been a resident of Blenheim Newport for 7 years prior to moving to Village House.He was the devoted husband of the late Elizabeth Anna Smith Hiscox. Born in Westerly, RI on August 12, 1914, he was the only son of the late Robert and Edna Leverich Hiscox. Mr. Hiscox began his working career on Wall Street and enjoyed playing and coaching basketball in young men?s leagues in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the US Navy and trained in Newport, prior to deployment to the South Pacific. After WWII he and his family resided in North Bellmore, Long Island, where he was active at St. Mark?s Methodist Church in Bellmore. He retired from Chase Bag Co. in 1979, and returned to RI with his wife. They lived in Middletown where he enjoyed league bowling. He became a member of St. Paul?s Methodist Church of Newport. Mr. Hiscox was a descendant of the Rev. William Hiscox, the founding minister of the 7th Day Baptist Church, Newport, the interior of which is featured in the Newport Historical Society. Rev. Hiscox officiated at the burial of 1st Governer of Rhode Island Providence Plantations, Governer Benedict Arnold in Newport in 1678. He was also a direct Mayflower descendant through Susanna White. He is survived by two daughters Janet Hiscox Palmer of Newport, RI, and Carolyn Leverich Hiscox of Tiverton, RI, four grandchildren Steven Leverich Palmer of Natick, MA, Andrew M. Palmer and Meghan R. Palmer both of Newport, RI and Peter Gregory Leverich DiMarzo of Tiverton, RI and five great grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2003, at 11:30am, in St. Paul United Methodist Church, 12 Marlborough Street, Newport.
