Lloyd Thomas Lou Conrad, 89, of 30 Bliss Road, Newport, and Naples, FL died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Patricia Maguire Conrad for 64 years.Born in French Lick, IN on January 27, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lillian Conrad.Lou graduated from URI in 1942 and then completed the US Navy Midshipman School at Northwestern Univ. in Chicago in 1943. He served in the Pacific for the duration of WW2, covering the Pacific Ocean from the Aleutian Islands to Tokyo. He served on the battleship USS New Mexico for his entire assignment, and received 9 Battle Stars during his time in the Navy.Upon his return from WW2, he first worked in insurance for John Hancock for several years. Lloyd then worked as a Banker, and worked his way up the ranks to serve as the acting CEO of the former Newport National Bank. He then changed careers and served as the former Executive Director of the United Cerebral Palsy Assoc. of RI and later as Secretary and Assistant Executive Director of the Newport Redevelopment Agency. In this position he worked as the project manager for the redevelopment of Goat Island.Lous career continued as a self employed Motel/Hotel operator. He was the former owner of the Sea View Motel, Carlton Motel, and the Muenchinger-King Hotel. Mr. Conrad also served his community as a co-founder and member of the Newport County Tourist and Convention Authority, as and a past Board member of the Newport County YMCA. He also enjoyed golf, and was a long time member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club. He was an excellent golfer, and placed as runner up in the Rhode Island Amateur Championship. He is survived by his wife Patricia Conrad, his children Thomas P Conrad of Middletown, RI, Robert L. Conrad of Newport, RI, and Kathryn Conrad also of Middletown, RI, and one brother Geroge W Conrad of Houston, TX. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia Conrad Marx, and a brother Robert Conrad, and a sister Pauline Allen. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at 11:00am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
