Middletown, - Louis J. Gomes, Sr., 82, of 955 Wapping Road Middletown, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Margaret Silvia Gomes. Born in Portsmouth, RI on Oct. 15, 1920, he was the son of James and Mary Motts Gomes. Mr. Gomes worked as a welder in the Public Works Department at the Newport Naval Base before retiring in 1979. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Middletown; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Portsmouth; the Portuguese-American Citizens Club of Portsmouth; and of the Seven Castles Club. He had played the guitar for many years with several local bands. He is survived by wife of 60 years, Margaret Gomes of Middletown, RI; two sons Louis J. Gomes Jr. of Portsmouth, RI and Dennis J. Gomes of Brandon, FL; two daughters Ann Zitterberg of Clearwater, FL, and Katherine Hatzberger of Portsmouth, RI; three sisters Josephine Silvia of Middletown, RI, Evelyn Fernandes of Middletown, RI, and Gertrude Narcizo of Sandusky, OH; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.He was the brother of the late James Gomes, John Gomes, Frank Gomes, Mary Escobar, Sadie Souza, Elizabeth Lacerda, and Anna Silvia. His funeral will be held Thursday, May. 1, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
